I see many postgres.exe processes in the task manager. is this normal?

This is normal, and typical of PostgreSQL, the embedded DeskNow database in Windows.

PostgreSQL, similarly to the Apache web server, creates a mini process for every database connection open. This improves security and stability.

Each miniprocess takes up little memory. DeskNow opens a number of database connections by default when it starts, so you will see these entries in the task manager. You can reduce the number of default connections in the Database.cfg configuration file - however it is not recommended to set it to less than 5, or performance may be affected.
